In the autumn as the weather cools and apples ripen, our thoughts turn to desserts with hints of cinnamon. A paleo apple crisp recipe is just what you need for this chilly, fall weekend!

Imagine that you're wearing thick, fluffy socks on your feet, wrapped in your favorite cozy blanket, and snuggled up in front of a warm, crackling fire. Ahhh... It's almost perfect. Maybe you have a hot cup of tea in your hands and are catching up on your latest Netflix binge. All you need to complete this picture of cozy perfection is a delicious snack... something sweet and tart with a soft cinnamon crunch.

This time of year is magical for bakers. Gardens and orchards have ripened for harvest, and the flavors of fruits and squash and ready for mixing into indulgent dessert creations. While pumpkin has been on our hearts and minds (and tongues), let us not overlook the humble apple.

Paleo recipe for apple crisp

Most apple crisp recipes call for ingredients like wheat flour and oatmeal (both grains, which we avoid), so the challenge in creating this recipe was finding a substitute for thickening the apple mixture and creating a crumbly, slightly crunchy topping. Fortunately, the versatility of our Vanilla Paleo Cake and Muffin Mix makes this apple crisp recipe both paleo AND incredibly easy to make.

This recipe only calls for about 1/4 of the bag of Paleo Cake and Muffin Mix, so you can easily double, triple, or quadruple this recipe for a large group or just yourself - hey, we won't judge. You could also use the extra mix to use in other recipes that call for partial bags of our baking mix, like Paleo Pumpkin Mug Cake.

Easy Apple Crisp Recipe

The best thing about this apple crisp recipe is that it is very quick and super easy, made with our Paleo Vanilla Cake and Muffin Mix. All you have to do is add a few basic baking ingredients you already have in your kitchen, pop it in the oven and voila! In minutes you will have created a slightly tart and sweet mouth-watering apple cinnamon delight for the senses. Our non-paleo test tasters licked the bowl after sampling this apple crisp!

Easy Paleo Apple Crisp Recipe

Easy Paleo Apple Crisp Recipe by Paleo Baking Company

Paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and refined sugar free

Makes approximately six servings. 

NOTE: This recipe calls for 1/2 cup of baking mix, which is approximately 1/4 of the entire bag.

Filling Ingredients:

  • 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced to 1/2" thick
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Paleo Vanilla Cake and Muffin Mix
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon coconut sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil, solid or at room temperature
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Directions:

  1. PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. SLICE apples to 1/2" thick and place in a small mixing bowl.
  3. ADD maple syrup and cinnamon, toss until apples are well coated.
  4. SPREAD apple mixture evenly in the bottom of 8x8" square pan.
  5. In another small mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup Paleo Vanilla Cake and Muffin Mix, coconut sugar, and cinnamon.
  6. CUT room temperature coconut oil into pea sized pieces (don't worry if it gets a little melty). Stir into topping mixture with a fork until no large chunks can be easily seen.
  7. Optional: If using nuts with this recipe, you should fold them into mixture now.
  8. SPREAD topping evenly over the top of the apple mixture.
  9. PLACE in oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on the top.
